Fira is the capital of the breathtaking beautiful island of Santorini which is located on the trim of Caldera cliff. Fira is a picture-perfect destination that offers a unique blend of rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes to the visitors. Concerning the food, there are plenty of different selections from restaurants to tavernas where somebody can taste the local cuisine while enjoying a caldera view. Also, for those who want to grab a bite there are many take away food shops at the square of Fira Santorini. You can grab something like souvlaki, gyros, burgers or pizza.

For shopping there are also a lot of shops, such as clothing, souvenirs, local products and jewelers.

The town of Fira, is known for its nightlife as there you will find most of the bars and the clubs of Santorini which are open till very late. The capital is considered to be the most fun place for a night out in Santorini.

Museums and historical sites

Fira is famous for the museums and the galleries which are settled there. The Museum of the Prehistoric Thera and the Archeological Museum of Santorini. Both are very interesting places to visit and offer a fascinating glimpse in the history and the culture of the island. The entrance fee is about 3€ and they are open daily, except Monday from 08:30 to 15:00.

Additionally, there is another museum a little bit outside of the center. The distance from the center is about 10-20 minutes far by walking from the main square of Fira and it is named the Folklore Museum of Emmanuel A. Lignos. This museum is open only during the summer time from 10:00 to 14:00.

Another worth-visiting place if you are interested to learn about t Santorini’s culture is the Megaro Gyzi in Fira. In this place there are paintings, manuscripts and old pictures of the island. During the summer months there are some cultural events taking place.

Are there beaches in Fira?

There are no beaches for swimming or sunbathing in Fira. But if somebody wants, they can use the public transportation to reach some of the most popular ones. Perissa, Kamari and the Red Beach are some of the best for swimming. Otherwise you can always book a taxi online to take you to every beach of the island.

The airport is about 5,6 km (3,5 miles) far from the city of Fira. There is a bus which is going straight there and a taxi station nearby the bus station where you can take a taxi. In order not to waiting and waste your time you can also book a taxi online.

How far is from Fira to the port?

The port is further than the airport 17 km (10,5 miles) far from Fira. To get there you can use the public transportation again or take a taxi from the taxi station. To be sure that you will not miss your ferry and that you will be at the port on time is better to pre-order a taxi online to pick you up.
