Although historically relatively new compared to other settlements on the island, Fira gained prominence after the devastating earthquake of 1956, which destroyed much of Santorini, including the then-capital, Pyrgos. Rebuilt with resilience, Fira now stands as a bustling centre where tradition meets modernity.

What sets Fira apart is its unique construction, characterised by a maze of narrow, winding streets filled with shops, cafes, and houses clinging to the edge of the caldera. This layout is a testament to the adaptive architecture of the Cyclades, designed to protect inhabitants from the elements and pirates in times gone by.

Fira boasts a collection of intriguing museums, including the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. This museum houses artefacts from the Akrotiri excavation, offering insights into the advanced civilisation that once flourished on the island before the catastrophic volcanic eruption around 1600 BC. Although there are clubs in Fira, you’ll find they are a lot more reserved than the ones you’ll find on mainland Greece. Fira, to Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia Walk

Hiking the path from Fira to Oia via the charming villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli is a wonderful experience that captures the attraction of Santorini. This scenic route that winds along the edge of the caldera presents an exclusive opportunity for hikers to indulge in the unique landscapes that make the island famous.

The journey begins at Fira, gradually unfolding panoramic vistas of the deep blue Aegean Sea below, accentuated by the stark cliffs of the caldera. Among the scenic views, the delightful churches and traditional Cycladic structures adorn the route.

The trek demands some effort, but it presents moments of calm, particularly as one approaches the quieter, yet equally enchanting, villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli.

The path covers 6.5 miles, and the duration of the journey may vary based on how much time you spend pausing at scenic overlooks and admiring historical landmarks en route. The travel time to the bustling town of Oia could range anywhere from 3 to 5 hours.

During peak summer, the route tends to be bustling with activity, particularly around hotspots. Climbing the many steps can prove to be quite challenging, especially since certain sections are uneven. Therefore, it's important to exercise caution and tread carefully, as I personally found some parts to be particularly strenuous.

Thing's to Do in Santorini

Santorini offers more than just sunsets and picturesque vistas. This island has activities waiting to be experienced:

Walk the Santorini Old Harbor Trail: By descending the Karavolades stairs or ride the mountain cable car to the charming Santorini Old Harbour. Please refrain from taking a donkey ride, I saw firsthand how these wonderful creatures get abused by their owners while volunteering at the Santorini Animal Welfare Association every morning during my fortnight on the island, seeing the physical and emotional scars they suffer was heartbreaking.
Archaeological Museum of Thera: Admire the island's rich history and explore artefacts from prehistoric to Roman periods.
Park: Escape the crowds by visiting the park located next to Thira Town Hall.
Megaro Gizi: Visit this cultural centre housed in a 17th-century mansion where you can enjoy various exhibitions, such as photographic displays and historical documents.
Pottery Classes: Experience the art of pottery by visiting a local ceramic studio, where you can watch artisans at work or even try your hand at creating your own piece.
Mati Art Gallery: For a glimpse into contemporary Greek art, visit the Mati gallery which features stunning pieces by artist Yorgos Kypris.

Hotels in Fira with a Caldera View

Picking the ideal accommodation is a crucial aspect of ensuring an exceptional experience whilst in Santorini, especially when it comes to taking in the breathtaking views of the caldera. My Experience Sightseeing in Fira

Fira, the capital of Santorini, is home to stunning whitewashed buildings including churches, museums, and cathedrals. With a sophisticated nightlife and atmosphere, Fira boasts an abundance of bars, shops, hotels, and restaurants, all offering amazing views of the blue domes and volcano.

As you’ll see in my video, exploring Fira by walking up steep cobbled paths to check out different viewpoints of the caldera. The views of the volcano and Thirasia island are truly remarkable.

During our first day in Fira, we enjoyed lunch at the V Lounge, which had some fantastic views. It was so pleasing just to sit back, relax, and take in the dreamy views while eating great food. It's no wonder why Fira and Oia are so popular with tourists and cruise ships.

While our hotel was in Karterados, we spent a lot of time in Fira, as it was only a 15-minute walk away. We would stroll up on the evenings and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Occasionally, we would dine at a pitta bar called Good Mood Food around the corner from the main bus station in Fira and ate a budget-friendly salad and chips in a pitta, for under 5 euros.

Compared to Oia and other places on the island, Fira has steeper paths. However, even for those of us who aren't the fittest people in the world, it's not so bad if you take breaks and hide in the shade for a few minutes.
