Bosnian Pyramids: Ancient Marvels or Modern Hoax?

In 2005, claims emerged stating that a series of hills in the small town of Visoko in central Bosnia & Herzegovina were in fact the oldest and largest human-made pyramids on Earth. It was said these pyramids predated the Egyptian pyramids by 20,000 years. Are the Bosnian Sarajevo pyramids real, or an elaborate hoax?

The enigma surrounding the Bosnian pyramids has captivated historians, archaeologists, and enthusiasts worldwide. Located around thirty-five kilometres northwest of Sarajevo in the town of Visoko, pyramid structures in the surrounding countryside have become a focal point of controversy and intrigue. Touted by some as the oldest man-made pyramids on Earth, could they reshape our understanding of ancient European civilisations and their capabilities?

The two largest such sites in Visoko are called the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Bosnia is therefore, according to some, the location of one of the world’s most perplexing archaeological mysteries.

If they were indeed constructed by hand, who made them and why? What were they used for? While much of northern and parts of western Europe were under a thick ice sheet, could an ancient, mysterious civilisation, predating agricultural humans by 12,000 years, have had advanced knowledge of construction, building techniques and materials, mathematics, physics and astronomy?

Over the years, a number of theories have come to light attempting to unravel this baffling conundrum. As we delve deeper into the mystery of the Sarajevo pyramids, we’ll attempt to unpick the questions that remain unanswered to this day.

Let’s dive into the confusing waters of Balkan history as we attempt to shed light on one of the world’s oddest mysteries.

The Strange Case of the ‘Bosnian Pyramids’

Semir Osmanagić, the Bosnian author who first brought these structures to international attention in 2005, believes they are genuine ancient pyramids, suggesting they may be over 25,000 years old. Such claims would place their construction well before the renowned pyramids of Egypt. For context, the oldest Egyptian pyramid is the Step Pyramid of Djoser, which dates back to around 4,600 years ago.

This assertion is based on reported excavations, artefacts, and geological analyses that, according to Osmanagić and his supporters, indicate the presence of ancient human activity.

It has also been suggested that the Bosnian pyramids are a highly sophisticated communications system emitting energy beams called ‘standing waves’ which are purported to be tens of millions of times faster than the speed of light.

However, in general the broader scientific and academic community has remained largely sceptical. Many archaeologists and geologists contest the idea that the so-called Sarajevo pyramids are man-made structures at all, and indeed the majority of experts in the field reject the notion that these hills are man-made pyramids. They argue that these Bosnian pyramids are naturally occurring hills, shaped by millennia of erosion and geological processes. Detractors further point out that no evidence of a civilisation with the capability to build such colossal structures has been found in Europe – or indeed anywhere around the world – from the time frame proposed.

Alongside the core theory, it has also been suggested that the Bosnian pyramids are a highly sophisticated communications system emitting energy beams called ‘standing waves’ which are purported to be tens of millions of times faster than the speed of light. This energy is said to confirm the presence of a cosmic internet.

In general, geologists and scientists who have studied the Pyramid of the Sun, Bosnia’s most unlikely tourist site, agree that they’re in fact natural geological formations known as flatirons. Indeed this is the predominant scientific explanation for the hills’ appearance.

A flatiron is a wedge-shaped hill formed in regions with alternating hard and soft rock layers. Due to tectonic forces, these layers uplift and, when exposed to erosion, the softer rock erodes more quickly than the harder rock. This differential erosion creates the characteristic steep slope on one side and a gentler slope on the other.

Yet there are other prevailing theories aside from Osmanagić’s posit that they’re the oldest and biggest human-made pyramids in the world.

Medieval Terraces or Mining Sites

Some local historians and archaeologists suggest that while the hills are natural, some modifications might have been made during mediaeval times, possibly for terracing or mining activities. This would explain some of the anomalies but would not support the ancient pyramid theory.

Atlantean or Extraterrestrial Constructions

Venturing into the realm of alternative theories, some believe that the Bosnian pyramids are remnants of the lost civilisation of Atlantis or were even constructed by extraterrestrial beings. Such claims are often based on interpretations of ‘energy readings’ or alignments of the pyramids with cosmic phenomena. These theories, it’s worth noting, are not supported by mainstream archaeology or history.

Fact or Fiction: The Saga of the Bosnian Pyramids

In the picturesque landscape of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the debate over the Visoko pyramids remains as layered and complex as the structures themselves.

While the fervour and passion of Osmanagić and his supporters highlight a deep yearning to unearth hidden legacies, the scepticism of the broader scientific community underscores the rigorous standards of this debate.

Whether these formations stand as testament to an ancient civilisation’s prowess or simply nature’s whimsical designs, they undeniably spark collective curiosity. As investigations continue and more voices join the discourse, debate over the nature of the Bosnian pyramids is ongoing. The allure of the unknown ensures that these formations, man-made or natural, will remain a focal point of intrigue for years to come.
